Die 9. Staffel wird in den USA im Herbst 2013 starten und aller Voraussicht nach im Mai 2014 enden. Nach Informationen von TV Guide handelt es sich um eine volle Staffel mit 24 Folgen, dies ist aber nicht offiziell bestätigt.

Der "Master Plan" von Carter Bays und Craig Thomas war ursprünglich auf 8 Staffeln ausgelegt, da alle beteiligten so lange unter Vertrag standen. Die Verlängerung um eine Staffel, die durch Jason Segels Filmkarriere am seidenen Faden hing, wirft nun die Frage auf, ob dies bedeutet, dass Ted die Mutter erst in der 9. Staffel oder doch wie ursprünglich geplant in der aktuell laufenden 8. Staffel. Die Pressemitteilung (siehe unten) deutet eher darauf hin, dass Ted die Mutter erst in der 9. Staffel treffen wurd. CBS-Chefin Nina Tassler hatte sich dazu folgendermaßen geäußert:

"It’s funny, we talked the other day [about], ‘[Will] people watch the show beyond knowing the mother?’ I bet there are a lot of people that would continue to watch after that. But right now, it’d be the end as designed by [co-creators] Carter [Bays] and Craig [Thomas], and I wouldn’t want to even attempt to undermine what their creative goal was."

"Wir haben kürzlich darüber gesprochen: schauen die Leute die Show auch noch, nachdem sie die Mutter kennen? Ich wette, dass viele noch weiterschauen würden. Aber im Moment wäre es das Ende, wie es Carter und Craig entworfen haben und ich würde auf keinen Fall versuchen ihr kreatives Ziel zu untergraben".

Neben allen Schauspielern sind auch das Produktions-Team um Carter Bays und Craig Thomas sowie Regisseurin Pamela Fryman wieder dabei. 

Josh Radnor, Neil Patrick Harris und Cobie Smulders äußerten bereits ihre Freude darüber, dass die Serie noch ein weiteres Jahr laufen wird:

Josh Radnor: "Nun bekommen wir ein Jahr, von dem wir alle wissen, dass es das letzte ist - wir bekommen also eine Art Ehrenrunde. Wir haben ein schöneres und langsameres Ende, bei dem wir die Dinge mehr genießen können."

Neil Patrick Harris: "Ich freue mich wahnsinnig, dass alle einer 9. Staffel zugestimmt haben. Wir haben monatelang gewartet, um herauszufinden, ob es nach dieser Staffel vorbei ist oder ob es noch eine weitere geben wird. Es wird, zum Glück keine 10, 11 oder 12 Staffeln geben, denn das will keiner. Aber für Staffel 9 haben sie eine großartige Idee für die ganze Staffel, sodass es sich lohnt so lange auf Antworten zu warten. Und umgekehrt freue ich mich auch, dass wir nicht nach acht Staffeln die Frage [nach der Mutter] in drei Folgen beantworten müssen."

Cobie Smulders: "Ich hatte irgendwie immer gedacht, dass es (die 9. Staffel) klappen wird, aber als ich dann um die Feiertage das Gefühl bekam "Oh, es könnte nicht klappen", machte mich das richtig traurig. Denn es ist das Ende einer Ära und How I Met Your Mother wurde ein zweites Zuhause für mich. Somit wird es toll sein, in Staffel 9 mit der Gewissheit zu gehen, dass es das nun ist. Es richtig einwirken lassen. Richtig dankbar sein und dieses letzte Jahr zu genießen.

CBS Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Television announced today that HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER will return for the 2013-2014 broadcast season. All series regulars – Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan, as well as series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas – will return for the final season, where audiences will final learn the identity of the Mother.

"Through eight years, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER has mastered the art of leading-edge comedy, emotional water-cooler moments and pop culture catch phrases,” said Nina Tassler, President, CBS Entertainment. “We are excited for Carter, Craig, Pam Fryman and this amazing cast to tell the final chapter and reveal television’s most mysterious mother to some of TV’s most passionate fans.”
